Originally organized five years ago Unity & Peace St. Augustine has evolved over the years and is now a not-for-profit organization that seeks to promote peace in St. Augustine and throughout the world. In 2011 the group decided to focus on International Day of Peace as established by the United Nations in 1982. That celebration took the form of many different activities throughout the community on and around that day.
In 2012, a variety of activities are being planned. These include a morning sunrise observation of International Peace at the beach followed by a labyrinth on the beach, galleries and shops focusing on peace, presentations in county libraries focusing on peace, brochures, moments of meditation in various churches and centers, programs on peace with a speaker(s), cooperation with businesses and restaurants in town and any other way we can spread the word of peace throughout the community. At least one church will be ringing their bells at noon on that day, and having a meditation for peace.
Ideas are still being formulated – any and all ideas are welcome as long as they focus on peace. We will not entertain any anti-war events because the focus is to be entirely on peace and celebrating peace in our community among everyone. The goal of Unity & Peace St. Augustine is that this day of celebrating peace will be ongoing and will celebrate peace among all. The Cities of St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach both issued Proclamations recognizing International Peace Day in 2011. We anticipate that will happen again in 2012.
The Planning Team is planning more activities and would welcome the participation of any person who also seeks to promote peace. Any profits generated from the day will be shared with local organizations that promote peace with their actions in the community. We welcome sponsors in all forms.
